Actress Mei Nagano, once dubbed the “Japanese sweetheart,” is facing a dramatic fall from grace following a high-profile affair scandal that erupted over a month ago.

The scandal, which linked her romantically to married actor Kei Tanaka, has led to an avalanche of backlash, including the loss of endorsements and acting roles.

Nine major brands including luxury names like Prada and SK-II have removed advertisements featuring Mei Nagano, citing that her image no longer aligns with their brand values. This comes as a sharp blow to the actress, who was previously ranked among the top 10 advertising stars of 2024.

Her agency, Stardust Promotion, has also confirmed Mei Nagano’s withdrawal from NHK’s upcoming drama “Toyotomi Brothers!”, scheduled to air in 2026. This move significantly affects her future prospects, as industry norms suggest she may be unwelcome in other major dramas until at least the end of 2026.

According to Yahoo Japan, sources say Mei Nagano has been deeply distressed and reclusive, spending most of her time at home. She is reportedly desperate to identify who leaked the now-infamous photos of her and Kei Tanaka, becoming emotionally volatile and suspicious even of those closest to her.

The scandal broke in late April when Bunshun Weekly published images and text messages implying Mei Nagano was involved with Kei Tanaka, who is married with two children. The same report also alleged a concurrent closeness between Mei Nagano and a Korean actor, her co-star from the TBS drama Caster.

Despite denials from all involved Kei Tanaka claimed Mei Nagano was merely a junior colleague the public backlash has been relentless.

Once a symbol of innocence and charm in Japanese media, Mei Nagano now finds herself fighting both public judgment and an industry that has swiftly turned its back.
